Common safety issues with intelligent water meters

Apr 14, 2023

With the birth of any smart product, consumers will consider a security issue. In the development and application practice of intelligent water meters, we have found common safety issues with intelligent water meters:

1. Security issues with data in the card. Although ordinary memory card data is encrypted and processed, the microcontroller in the intelligent prepaid water meter has to complete a large amount of real-time work, and is unable to perform complex encryption work on the data. In addition, it is not easy to implement one meter per card with ordinary memory cards. Once encrypted, but leaked or cracked, fake cards will appear and cause huge economic losses to the power supply department. Although a logical encryption card can achieve one card for one meter, preventing a complete system crash, connecting a memory oscilloscope from the card port can easily obtain the key for each card and achieve the purpose of stealing electricity from a single meter. Moreover, once the format of the initialization card and production card of the above two types of cards is leaked or decoded, there will be no need to buy a card and use electricity. These will cause huge economic losses to the power supply department.

2. The microcontroller program in the intelligent water meter is read out, resulting in the encryption element being known by hackers. Due to tight schedule or unstable production in many meter factories, the single-chip microcomputer in intelligent prepaid water meters uses the 0TP type for on-site recording. Due to the need for comparison during the burning process, many single-chip microcontrollers have a program machine code that can be read. The source program can be obtained by disassembling, and the method of stealing electricity and making fake cards can be mistakenly identified by dividing the source program.
