Differences Between Pulse-Type Remote Water Meters and Photoelectric Direct-Reading Remote Water Meters

Jan 07, 2026

In recent years, due to the continuous development of intelligent technology, water meter payment methods have also been developing in an intelligent direction. Pulse-type remote water meters and photoelectric direct-reading remote water meters are good examples of this, both offering intelligent functions such as long-distance data transmission, tiered water billing, and mobile payment. These two types of water meters significantly improve the accuracy and efficiency of water meter readings. However, the differences between these two types of water meters are also evident. Below is a brief discussion of their differences.

The difference between pulse-type water meters and photoelectric direct-reading water meters lies in their signal transmission and direct reading methods. Pulse-type water meters are based on electromechanical water meters, using pulse signals to achieve automated remote reading. This pulse signal is output periodically during water metering and is less susceptible to interference during transmission.

Photoelectric direct-reading water meters, on the other hand, are based on photoelectric digital water meters. They use photoelectric technology to read the digital signal of the water meter, achieving automatic metering and data uploading, avoiding the problems of pulse counting errors and transmission interference.

Furthermore, there are differences in their usage. Pulse-type remote water meters are commonly used in residential areas, buildings, and commercial water metering applications. They are easy to install on a large scale, convenient for retrofitting existing water meters, and have low operating costs.

Photoelectric direct-reading water meters are mainly used in industrial and commercial water metering, offering higher accuracy and faster and more stable data transmission.

In terms of performance, photoelectric direct-reading water meters clearly have advantages over pulse-type water meters. Photoelectric direct-reading meters use photoelectric reading sensors to synchronously read the digital signal on the water meter and transmit it to a concentrator. They offer higher metering accuracy than pulse-type water meters, and provide faster and more stable data reading.

In addition, photoelectric direct-reading remote water meters have high networking capabilities, allowing for data uploading and management through remote communication, enabling management personnel to remotely view and control the meters. The digital signal of photoelectric direct-reading water meters is irreversible, making it less susceptible to human error affecting the accuracy of metering data.

However, in practical applications, both pulse-type water meters and photoelectric direct-reading water meters can effectively perform their metering tasks. The differences mainly lie in their respective applicable fields and usage scenarios, and the choice should be made based on actual needs. Both pulse-type remote-reading water meters and photoelectric direct-reading water meters are common types of smart water meters currently available on the market. Both types have their own advantages and can automatically read data, making water billing more accurate. However, they differ in signal transmission, reading methods, and application areas, so users should choose the water meter that best suits their needs.
