I. Functional differences
Mechanical water meter
Single functional basis: The main function of mechanical water meter is to simply mechanically measure the water consumption. The rotation of the impeller drives the pointer on the dial to rotate or the character wheel to advance through the transmission gear, thereby intuitively reflecting the accumulated water consumption, and no other complex functions are involved. For example, in household water metering, users can only see how many cubic meters of water are used, and there are no more functions.
Traditional reading method: Reading requires manual on-site inspection of the water meter dial or character wheel. Generally, meter readers are required to regularly go to the user's home or the location of the water meter to read the meter one by one. This method is inefficient, especially for large-scale communities or commercial user groups. The workload of meter reading is large and prone to errors.
Smart water meter
Multi-function integration: Smart water meters include multiple functions. Such as remote control of water meter switches, remote meter reading, remote recharge, intelligent display reading and other functions. For water supply management departments, this remote function can realize real-time monitoring and management of user water use. If abnormal water use (such as leakage, water theft, etc.) is found, it can be handled in time. It is also convenient to calculate the tiered water price, and calculate the water fee according to different prices according to different usage sections. For example, in the residential water management of some cities, when the user's water usage reaches the upper limit of the tiered water price, the smart water meter can automatically calculate the water fee according to the high-tier price.
Convenient prepayment function: users can pre-deposit water fees in the water meter in advance through prepaid card recharge or online payment (such as WeChat, Alipay, etc.). When the water fee balance is insufficient, the water meter can remind the user (such as through the water meter display prompt, SMS notification, etc.), and when the balance is zero, the water meter can automatically shut down the water supply, effectively eliminating the phenomenon of arrears of water fees.
2. Differences in technical principles
Mechanical water meter
Pure mechanical structure principle: It mainly relies on the kinetic energy of the water flow to drive the impeller to rotate, and then transmits the rotation of the impeller to the counter (dial or character wheel) through a series of mechanical transmission components such as shafts, gears, and worms, so as to achieve the measurement of water volume. This structure does not require external energy supply, has a simple structure, and is straightforward to operate. As long as the physical components of the water meter are normal and the water flows through, it can work normally. However, because it is a purely mechanical structure, it is easily affected by impurities and water quality in the water flow. For example, foreign objects such as rust and sand may block the impeller or wear the internal gears.
Smart water meter
Integrates a variety of advanced technologies: it installs sensors inside the water meter to convert the mechanical readings of the water meter into electrical signals, and then collects, transmits and stores data on the electrical signals, and displays water usage data according to user needs. For example, commonly used smart water meters use microelectronics technology to integrate and process collected data, and use communication technology (such as RS-485 communication technology or GPRS remote communication technology, etc.) to realize information transmission between water meter data and external equipment (such as charging systems, management platforms, etc.). In addition, some smart water meters also use smart IC card technology to realize prepayment functions, and interact the fee information in the card with the water meter through the read-write chip.
3. Differences in ease of use and management efficiency
Mechanical water meter
Limited user experience: Users can only passively accept meter reading data from meter readers, and if they forget to check the meter reading due to negligence or are not at home when the meter reader reads the meter, they miss the meter reading time, which can easily lead to delayed payment or disputes. In terms of payment, it is necessary to pay at the property or designated charging point in the traditional way, which is not convenient and fast enough.
Low management efficiency: For water supply departments or property management departments, a large amount of manpower is required for meter reading, charging, statistics and other work. Manual meter reading is prone to errors, and there are a series of management problems caused by the time difference of meter reading, such as difficulty in timely grasping the changes in user water consumption and difficulty in timely detection of water theft and leakage.
Smart water meter
Convenient for users to manage water consumption and payment: Users can check their water consumption at any time (if the water meter provides local display function or through APP), arrange water consumption reasonably according to actual needs, and can make prepaid recharges anytime and anywhere through convenient online payment methods. For example, users can easily check the current balance, recent water consumption and other information through the mobile phone APP, avoiding the inconvenience caused by delaying payment or water outage due to arrears.
Efficient management mode: The water supply department or property can remotely obtain water meter data through the information management system, monitor the user's water use in real time, and conduct macro-control of water resources, water leakage monitoring, user water use behavior analysis and other management operations through background data analysis, which greatly improves management efficiency and service quality.
4. Differences in price and maintenance costs
Mechanical water meter
The price is relatively low: Due to its simple structure and mature technology, the production and manufacturing cost of mechanical water meters is relatively low, so the price is generally cheaper. For ordinary families or small commercial users, the cost pressure is relatively small when purchasing a water meter for the first time. For example, the price of a common household rotor-type mechanical water meter may range from tens of yuan to one or two hundred yuan.
The maintenance cost is relatively low: If a fault occurs, although most cases require manual troubleshooting and repair, due to the relatively simple mechanical structure, the equipment and technical requirements for maintenance are relatively low. Some common faults such as pointer jamming and impeller clogging have relatively low maintenance costs. Moreover, mechanical water meters have a long service life and do not require additional power supply, which reduces the cost caused by battery replacement, etc.
Smart water meters
High initial purchase cost: Because they contain more advanced technical components, such as sensors, control chips, communication modules, etc., and require software development and system integration, the production cost is relatively high. Often the price of smart water meters is much higher than that of mechanical water meters, which may reach hundreds of yuan or even thousands of yuan, especially some advanced smart water meters with high-precision measurement and multi-functions are more expensive.
The maintenance cost is complex and higher: Once a smart water meter fails, it is necessary not only to check the mechanical part, but also to check and repair the electronic components, communication components and software systems, which requires maintenance personnel to have knowledge and skills in electronic circuits, communications and software, and the maintenance tools and equipment are more complex, so the maintenance cost will be relatively high. In addition, the battery (if any) in the smart water meter has a limited service life and needs to be replaced regularly, which is also an additional expense.
